Ni-Naadaamadiz Wins Indigenous Award at Yorkton Film Fest

Toronto, ON — May 24, 2026 — Ni-Naadamaadiz: Red Power Rising has been awarded the Indigenous Award at the prestigious Yorkton Film Festival, recognizing the film’s powerful storytelling and contribution to Indigenous cinema. The festival’s Indigenous Award honours productions that tell Indigenous stories, explore Indigenous issues, or present an Indigenous worldview.

Directed by Shane Belcourt, produced by Tanya Talaga at Makwa Creative and co-produced by Antica Productions, the film revisits the historic 1974 Anicinabe Park occupation in Kenora, Ontario — an often overlooked moment in Indigenous resistance and land back movements in Canada. Through firsthand accounts, archival materials, and contemporary reflections, Ni-Naadamaadiz: Red Power Rising connects past struggles to ongoing conversations around Indigenous sovereignty, identity, and justice.

Founded in 1947, the Yorkton Film Festival is recognized as the longest-running film festival in North America and remains one of Canada’s most respected showcases for documentary storytelling.

Ni-Naadamaadiz: Red Power Rising premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2025 and has continued to build momentum through festival screenings and audience engagement across the country.
