About The Secret Path Project
Secret Path acknowledges a dark period in Canada’s history: the long suppressed mistreatment of indigenous children and families by the residential school program. This is an important and long overdue conversation. It’s a discussion that is just starting to happen – and it’s only the first step down a long road to reconciliation.
Secret Path is an animated film adaptation of Gord Downie’s (Tragically Hip) poetry and music and Jeff Lemire’s graphic novel. It’s tells the wrenching and all too common story of Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old boy who died fifty years ago after running away from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School near Kenora, Ontario.
The Secret Path was broadcast by CBC in an hour-long commercial-free television in October of 2017.
